What does it mean to be an ACVIM Diplomate?
Internists in Large animal medicine are specialists in medical diseases of horses, cattle, and other hoofed animals.
Examples of medical diseases include:
Gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric ulcers, rumen acidosis, and diarrhea
Lung diseases such as pneumonia or inflammatory airway disease
Endocrine diseases such as equine metabolic syndrome and equine pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (Equine Cushing’s Disease).
Diseases unique to neonatal foals, crias, calves, and other large animals.
Bacterial infections such as Strep. Equi infections (Strangles)
Viral diseases such as equine viral arteritis and equine herpes virus
Laminitis
Other diseases of animals that do not require surgery
Diseases of Horses, particularly thyroid and pituitary disease, and equine metabolic syndrome.
